Filler materials for teeth are substances used in dentistry to rebuild cavities in teeth caused by decay, trauma, or other reasons. Their task is to fill cavities, restore the function of the tooth, and prevent further erosion or infection.

The most commonly used tooth filling materials include:

  • Dental composites - these are materials composed of resins and ceramic or glass fillers. They allow for a natural tooth appearance, are durable, and resistant to mechanical damage.

  • Amalgams - these are metal alloys, mainly of mercury, silver, copper, and tin, which have been used for over 150 years. Amalgams are durable and resistant to mechanical damage, but they are not aesthetically pleasing and can be harmful to health because they release mercury.

  • Glass ionomers - this is a material composed of glass powder and polyalkenoic acid. Glass ionomer is used for cavities in baby teeth because it is easier to apply than composites, but it is not as durable.

  • Ceramics - this is a material used to rebuild cavities in anterior teeth because it provides a very natural aesthetic effect.

The choice of the appropriate tooth filling material depends on many factors, such as the location of the cavity, its size and depth, as well as the preferences of the patient and the dentist.

What materials are dental fillings made of?

In the past, only amalgam fillings were used due to the lack of other materials. Thanks to increasingly innovative solutions, it is now possible to create aesthetic and durable dental fillings made of various materials, such as composites, plastics, or ceramics. Depending on the needs and clinical cases, a dentist now has a wide range of filling materials to choose from. The advantage of modern filling materials is their high biocompatibility and lack of negative interactions with the patient's body, as well as a wide range of shades to choose from, which makes a properly executed filling very difficult to distinguish from natural dentin.

How to choose the appropriate filling material?

Depending on the class of the cavity, we can choose the appropriate filling material (manufacturers provide such information), as well as depending on whether it is intended for front, side, or cervical teeth.
