Hydrocolloids, which naturally occur as seaweed extracts (alginates), among others, form the basis of alginate impression masses for prosthetic applications. Alginates are polysaccharides obtained from brown algae and seagrass.
Alginate prosthetic impression compounds are materials used in dentistry to make impressions of a patient's mouth. They are made of alginates, i.e. salts of alginic acid, which, when mixed with water, create a gel consistency. When applied to the patient's teeth and gums, alginate impression masses easily adapt to the shape and surface of the teeth, creating an accurate model of the oral cavity.
Alginate prosthetic impression compounds are used in many cases, for example to make dentures, crowns, bridges, tooth pads or to analyze the patient's bite. Due to their ease of use, accuracy and availability in various forms and flavors, they are widely used in dental practice.
