Binding systems are materials used in dentistry to connect dental fillings to tooth tissues. They may be light-curing, self-etching or contain materials that increase the bonding force.
Light-curing bonding systems consist of a resin and a light activator that, when connected and exposed to emitted UV or near-infrared light, cure and provide lasting communication between the filling and the tooth.
Self-etching binding systems contain acid and resin that form a chemical connection to tooth tissue. The acid itself digests the enamel and dentin to form microcrops into which the resin can penetrate and form a permanent bond.
Materials that increase bonding strength are additives to bonding systems that improve their properties. They may contain silica, aluminum fluoride or other ingredients that increase adhesion to the tooth and fill.
All these materials are important for permanent and effective tooth filling, which prevents further erosion and loss.
